There is nothing like a college football game on a warm summer evening at the Rose Bowl.
On August 31, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. the rejuvenated Wolf Pack of the
University of Nevada comes to Pasadena to take on the PAC-12 South Division Champion UCLA Bruins in the season opener for both teams. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams and we believe this is the first time Nevada has played in the Rose Bowl, which would make this a momentous and history making game for a number of reasons.
Why this game is huge:
Battle of the quarterbacks
These two teams have the Cadillac of quarterbacks in Nevada’s Cody Fajardo and UCLA’s Brent Hundley. The school that made Colin Kaepernick a household name has a returning gunslinger in Fajardo. Fajardo led the team last year, completing 67 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards with 20 touchdowns, while running for 1,121 yards with 12 scores. Last season, Hundley established school records for single season total offense (4,095 yards), and single season passing yardage (3,740). Both Fajardo and Hundley are being mentioned as Heisman Trophy candidates. In fact, both have already been listed on the Heisman Trophy Watch List by the Heisman Pundit. How they perform in this game will set the stage for that run.
Creative offenses
Nevada’s innovative pistol vs UCLA’s shock-and-awe firepower. Both teams are going to score, and score a lot. Nevada is a team that has consistently given PAC-12 teams all they can handle. Last season Nevada opened their season by beating CAL and closed the season in losing by one point to Arizona 49-48 in their post season bowl game. This is a big game that Nevada CAN win. UCLA finished their season averaging almost 35 points and 467 yards a game.
Fast starts
Last season Nevada started out of the gate 6-1, while UCLA won their first three games by an average of over 20 points each. Expect both teams to be ready to “bring it” on game day.
New coaches
The Brian Polian era at Nevada starts at this game. While keeping the famous Nevada pistol offense, Polian will also bring the swagger of his last coaching position at Texas A&M. After helping the Aggies to an 11-2 season with wins over Alabama and Oklahoma, not to mention a Heisman Trophy, Polian is ready to light it up at Nevada. While at UCLA, former NFL head coach Jim Mora is starting his second season, has had two outstanding recruiting classes and is considered on of the rising stars of college football.
